I’m a lover of the world and far off places who is so excited that you’re here. Looking forward to sharing more of my world with you and all the things I love. I hope this site really does feel like a wellness oasis right here on the internet.
I haven’t been to Tulum in about a year, but I always get asked for reccomendations and it’s one of my favoriite places to go in Mexico. The reason I’ve loved it is because it’s usually an inexpensive international getaway perfect for a long weekend. Cancun resorts are just not for me and Tulum is alot more chill. It’s definitely gotten more popular, but I love how close to cenotes and the beach everything is. Tulum is about an hour and a half from Cancun’s airport, so it’s not hard to get to by car or even local bus. I’m much more into an experience that’s a little off the beaten path, so Tulum is perfect. It’s still up and coming, but that’s a part of the charm. If you’re on a budget, I would suggest booking an Airbnb, although there are some gorgeous boutique hotels in the area as well.
Airbnb Listings: I’m a huge advocate of Airbnb, especially when I’m looking to maximize my experience on a budget. With anything new, and Airbnb in particular, my advice is to read reviews. People give honest feedback and it’s always good to know what to expect
Penthouse / Rooftop Infinity Pool 5 WD is the first place I stayed in when I got to Tulum. The rooms are large with a small kitchen available. The best feature of this listing is definitely the rooftop pool, it’s beautiful. This place is located a few minutes off the main road and about a 10-15 minute car ride away from the beach. With a rented car, scooter, or the bikes they provide, you’re all set to explore. Diego is a great host and has other similar properties– I would check out the other listings if this one is unavailable.
Tulum Nah A4 was the place I stayed the second time I went to Tulum. Rooms were a little smaller, but the place is closer to the beach which was nice– the ride was about 5-7 minutes. No rooftop pool, but there is a pool on ground level. The hosts Salvador and Fabiola were accessible at anytime which is always great.
Hotel Options: I stayed at Airbnb’s both visits to Tulum but went to a few hotels to eat and explore. If I went back again, I would stay at one of the following hotels.
Mi Amor Boutique Hotel: Unique Resort and Spa located on the beach. It’s on my list for the next time I’m in Tulum. Small enough that your experience is intimate but large enough to provide a variety of amenities.
Ahau Tulum: I ate breakfast here before hitting Tulum Jungle Gym, which is nearby and everything looked beautiful from the quick walk around I took. Another small boutique resort located on the beach with gorgeous villas and wonderful staff.
Papaya Playa Project: If you want to be near a great nightlife vibe at a gorgeous moderately priced hotel, this is the place for you. I’ve not stayed, but the space looks like tons of fun.
Habitas Tulum: This is a nature-focused paradise for those looking for eco-friendly but amazing beachside accomodations. I’ve heard amazing things about the experience and I’ve also heard its so worth it to have an ocean front room.
What should you do in Tulum?
Ruins, Cenotes & Beaches: The Ruinas Mayas de Tulum are a must-see and the beach at the ruins is perfect after a long walk around. Once you’ve enjoyed the ruins, there are many spots for public beach access along the route back to town. Small underwater caves, called Cenotes, are everywhere! Great for snorkeling, swimming, and staying cool.
Eat at Burrito Amor: Burrito Amor is MY FAVORITE place to eat in Tulum. The menu offers so many healthy but tasty options. They’re open for breakfast lunch and dinner. The chicken burrito with a coconut water is my meal of choice any time of day. Burrito Amor also has WIFI!
Tulum Jungle Gym: If Fred Flintstone worked out today, this is where you would find him! Lifting is a challenge but so much more fun with a beach view. The classes are a great option but if you want to play with all the equipment and get a work out in on your own, you totally can. The gym is open from 7am-12pm each day with a day pass costing roughly $20 USD.
Xel-Ha: A natural adventure park that was way more fun than I expected. Located about 30 minutes from Tulum, it’s the perfect day trip if you want to snorkel freely, enjoy a lazy river, swim with stingrays, and experience a ton of other cool outdoor activities. I would recommend buying the tickets in advance since you can save quite a bit. The day flies by and the park does get busy, so go early.
There’s so much more to see and do, but these are the highlights. As always it’s amazing just to walk around and experience something new. Enjoy Tulum!
